The Jesus Code: “Ask! What Shall I Give You?” + LINKUP

The Jesus Code

Chapter 9 of The Jesus Code: 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer, by O.S. Hawkins. For those of you just tuning in, The Jesus Code has 52 questions, one to contemplate each week. The author believes every Christian should be able to answer these important questions.

This week’s question: “Ask! What shall I give you?” (1 Kings 3.5).

Solomon had just succeeded his father David as king. He was young, less than 20 years old, with little experience and big shoes to fill. Hawkins says:

At this time of his life, Solomon was pure and virtually void of pride. He journeyed to Gibeon to worship and humbly seek God’s help and direction. There God met him and asked the new king, “Ask! What shall I give you?” which is to say, “What do you want from Me?”

What an incredible question! If God asked you that question, what would you say?

The author goes on:

Everyone wants something . What you want may not be what you need, but what you want can be a very good indication of where your heart is.

Solomon replied, “Give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” (1 Kings 3: 9).

What were the three things Solomon asked for?

He asked God to work with him. That’s where it should always start. Most of us want change. Lord, change my husband, change my wife, change my kids … my boss … or whomever. But we need to first ask God to change us.

Solomon next asked God to work in him not around him. The problems we have are first internal. Instead of asking God to change our circumstances, we need to ask him to change us from the inside.

Then he asked God to work through him so he could judge God’s people. Too many of our prayers are “bless me prayers.” It not wrong to ask God to bless us, but that should not be the sum total of our prayers.

Solomon chose the best, and God went above and beyond. The Lord said, “I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart. . . . And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days” (1 Kings 3: 12– 13).

What do you want ? The good news is when you choose the best, God will more than bless.

Next week’s question is, “How long will you falter between two opinions?” (1 Kings 18.21).

The question for week one was, “Has God Indeed Said …?”
Week two: “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
Week three: “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”
Week four: “Who am I?”
Week five: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?” (Numbers 21.5).
Week six: “If the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?” (Judges 6.13).
Week seven: “Is there still anyone … That I may show him kindness?” (2 Samuel 9.1).
Week eight: “Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight?” (2 Samuel 12.9).

You can get a copy of The Jesus Code and follow along with these 52 vital questions. The chapters are short and can easily be read in one sitting. If you do, I’d love your feedback. Click here to get the book or here for Kindle.
