Chapter 12 of The Jesus Code: 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer by O.S. Hawkins.
This week’s question: “Why are we sitting here until we die?” (2 Kings 7.3).
The city of Samaria was under siege by the Syrians. The people inside the city were dying of starvation, but the options were not good. Outside the city the Syrian army threatened certain death.
Sitting in the gate of the city were four lepers. They were faced with the same two terrible choices as the other people in the city, but they started asking themselves, “Why are we sitting here until we die?” I imagine them saying, if we stay here we are going to die of starvation, we might as well try something. What have we got to lose?
The author uses this story to talk about the two kinds of sense we need in our Christian life. He says we need “uncommon sense,” faith to believe in the supernatural, saving power of God, but we also need the “common sense” that these four lepers exercised.
These four lepers had nothing to lose, so they took a risk. Listen in on their reasoning: “If we say, ‘We will enter the city,’ the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. And if we sit here, we die also. Now therefore, come, let us surrender to the army of the Syrians. If they keep us alive, we shall live, and if they kill us, we shall only die” (2 Kings 7: 4). Common sense was whispering in their ears, “It’s time to take a risk.” Note the four ifs in this verse. Clearly, the four men had absolutely nothing to lose, so they took a risk, and the reward was greater than they had ever dreamed. The army they’d expected to see had fled, and the city of Samaria was now safe and free!
But the story doesn’t stop there:
These four starving men entered the Syrian army’s abandoned camp and feasted on the food left on the tables of the soldiers who had fled into the darkness. But once again common sense kicked in, and they said one to another, “We are not doing right. This is a day of good news, and we remain silent. If we wait until the morning light, some punishment will come upon us. Now therefore, come, let us go and tell the king’s household” (2 Kings 7: 9).
Imagine the joy inside the city when that good news was delivered! Prayers were answered because four men decided to exercise common sense, take a risk, and then do what was right.
Next week’s question is: “Should such a man as I flee?” (Nehemiah 6.11).
