Chapter 18 of The Jesus Code: 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer by O.S. Hawkins.
This week’s question: “How can a young man cleanse his way?” (Psalm 119.9).
We live in a world very different from the one in which many of us grew up. Those of us old enough to remember the 50’s & 60’s watched shows like Leave It to Beaver, Father Knows Best, and I Love Lucy. Even those a little younger are shocked by what is acceptable on TV today.
Today our children and grandchildren are often exposed to programs that are full of sexual innuendo (if not outright sexual content), unbiblical lifestyles, and homes where mom and dad have little influence.
They are given sex education in school with little or no emphasis on biblical morality or abstinence. Out of wedlock pregnancy, once a reason for removal from school, is now commonplace and alternative lifestyles are considered the norm.
So how can young people and adults stay morally pure in God’s eyes today?
Although our culture continues to deteriorate, the answer to the psalmist’s question, “How can a young man cleanse his way?” is the same now as when the psalm was written. The answer is constant and unwavering. It has never changed, and it will never change. The answer has three parts.
- Know the Word
- Stow the Word
- Show the Word
Know the Word. Hawkins goes on:
Every believer should be able to give an answer to three vital matters in Scripture, beginning with the inerrancy of the Word of God. The Bible says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3: 16– 17). Second, the deity of Christ is an essential and basic truth. The Bible says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1: 1, emphasis added). Third, believers should be able to explain the means of salvation: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2: 8). So the first step in keeping oneself pure is knowing the Word of God. Read it and study it . . . daily.
Stow the Word. The Psalmist answered his own question when he said, “Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against thee” (Ps. 119.11).
Show the Word. It’s not enough to know the Word or even to stow the Word, if we don’t also obey the Word.
The author ends with this sound advice:
When you find yourself at temptation’s corner, trying to decide which way to turn, ask yourself these three questions:
- Can I thank God for it? “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5: 18).
- Can I do it in Jesus’ name? “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3: 17).
- Can I do it for God’s glory? “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10: 31).
Next week’s question is: “Where can I go from Your Spirit?” (Psalm 139.7).
Last week’s question: “Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?” (Psalm 24.3). Read it here.
