Chapter 16 of The Jesus Code: 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer by O.S. Hawkins.
This week’s question: “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11.3).
The first paragraph of this chapter says it all:
A news reporter once asked someone, “What are the two greatest problems facing America?” The man replied, “I really don’t know— and I really don’t care!” And there you have it, the two greatest problems facing our nation: ignorance (“ I don’t know”) and apathy (“ I don’t care”). No two single factors are working harder to destroy the very foundation of our nation than ignorance and apathy.
The author goes on:
George Washington entered the office of the presidency with these wise words: “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.” In 1796 he left office with this farewell: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars.” Sadly, our first president would not recognize his nation today.
Hawkins goes on the talk about those pillars, listing four that are crumbling before our eyes:
- The Pillar of Dignity (self-respect, respect for others and respect for human life, including the life of the unborn).
- The Pillar of Devotion (to God, home & country).
- The Pillar of Duty (the strong American work ethic has been replaced by an entitlement mentality).
- The Pillar of Decency (vulgarity, obscenity, nudity and pornography are accepted with hardly a whimper opposition).
Hawkins ends with this:
Our neighbors to the north and south— Canada and Mexico— were discovered by explorers looking for gold and dominion. But the American settlers were looking not for gold, but for freedom to live out the gospel of Jesus Christ. They were in search of God, not gold. They came to the New World, as stated in the Mayflower Compact, “for the glory of God and advancements of the Christian faith.”
King David’s question needs to be asked again today: “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
Next week’s question is: “Who may ascent into the Hill of the Lord?” (Psalm 24.3).
Last week’s question: “If a man dies, shall he live again?” (Job 14.14). Read it here.
