Hello Everyone,
Every year about this time, I have someone say, “I wish I had started reading through the Bible in January, but it’s kind of late now. Maybe next year.”
The problem is that the next Christmas and New Year’s season rolls around just as busy as the last one. The bottom line is “next year” often never comes.
Yet, the Bible is God’s Word. All of it. And nothing was included by accident. Every word, every chapter and every book is important.
My husband Mike is hard of hearing so he wears hearing aids. When he doesn’t put them in, he misses things in the conversation and I find myself repeating myself or what I call translating what others have said.
And even though we were created in the image of God, sin has left us all hard of hearing spiritually. We have to hear things repeated over and over and we need to be sure we’re hearing all of the conversation God has with us through His Word, the Bible.
If not, we’re vulnerable to misunderstandings, confusion, and instances where the Bible seems to contradict itself simply because we have never read other passages that explain and clarify. One principle of good Bible study is to read Scripture in light of other Scripture.
But even more dangerous is that it leaves us open to weak, unbiblical and even false teaching.
It’s not enough to think we have been in church long enough and have “heard it all.” And we shouldn’t think that going to church once a week will expose us to the important things. Not even having read through it once in our lives is enough. We must hear it over and over.
So I have a challenge for you if you don’t have a plan for reading through the Bible and have been thinking … maybe next year … or maybe sometime.
It’s not for the faint-hearted but it’s doable and will catch you up by March 1 if you read just 15 readings between now and then. You don’t have to read each one in a single sitting. You can break them up throughout the day, if necessary. I’ve divided it all out for you to make it easy. Then you can pick up with the regular 365-day devotional and readings.
