“Is There Forgiveness After Abortion?” October 20

Abortion is constantly in the news.

It is debated politically.

Argued about passionately.

Defended as a right by some and mourned as the taking of innocent life by others.

But behind all the headlines are real people.

Real fear.

Real pressure.

Real choices.

And sometimes very real regret.

Perhaps you have had an abortion.

Maybe someone you love has.

Or perhaps you are facing an unexpected pregnancy and wondering what to do next.

What does God say about the life growing inside the womb?

What if you are afraid?

What if you feel trapped?

What if you have already made a choice you now deeply regret?

And perhaps the hardest question of all:

Is there a sin so serious that God will never forgive it?

Today’s New Testament reading looks ahead to the rise of the lawless one and the increasing rejection of truth that will characterize the last days.

But Scripture does not call us merely to watch what is happening around us.

It calls us to remain faithful.

To love the truth.

To stand for what God says is right.

To help those who are vulnerable.

And to speak about sin in a way that never loses sight of the gospel.

Because abortion is not merely a political issue.

It is a moral issue.

A life-and-death issue.

And for many people, a painfully personal one.

So today we’ll talk about what Scripture says, how Christians can respond, what someone contemplating abortion should do, and whether forgiveness and peace are possible for the person who has already been there.

The answer is serious.

But it is not hopeless.

Most of us have wondered about eternity.

Perhaps as a child you lay awake thinking:

What happens when we die?

Where do we go?

What will eternity be like?

Will we still be ourselves?

Even believers who know where they will spend eternity can wonder what life beyond this one will actually be like.

Solomon said that God has placed eternity in our hearts.

Maybe that helps explain why our culture seems so fascinated with what lies beyond the grave.

Movies and television are filled with vampires, zombies, ghosts, and the so-called living dead.

But Scripture gives us a very different picture.

The Bible tells us there really was a time when graves opened and people who had died came out.

And it tells us something even more astonishing:

It will happen again.

But not with decaying bodies and filthy grave clothes.

Those who belong to Christ will receive bodies fitted for eternity.

Paul describes a day when the Lord Himself will descend from heaven, the dead in Christ will rise, and believers who are still alive will be caught up together with them to meet the Lord.

So what exactly will happen?

What happens to believers between death and resurrection?

And why did Paul say these truths should comfort us?

Today we’ll look at the resurrection of believers, the Rapture, an extraordinary event that occurred after Christ’s crucifixion, and the hope God has given us concerning eternity.
