What is it about the Bible?
Why can words written thousands of years ago comfort us when we are hurting, confront us when we are wrong, expose motives we would rather ignore, and speak to areas of our lives no human author could possibly know about?
Why have people throughout history tried to silence, discredit, or destroy it?
And why does it still provoke such strong reactions today?
Hebrews gives us part of the answer:
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…”
The Bible does not merely give us information.
God uses His Word to expose what is going on beneath the surface—our thoughts, motives, desires, excuses, and loyalties.
That can be comforting.
But it can also be uncomfortable.
Because we naturally prefer a book we can evaluate to a Book that evaluates us.
Yet Hebrews 4 does something remarkable.
Immediately after reminding us that nothing is hidden from God, it points us to Jesus, our great High Priest, and invites us to come boldly before God.
So what do we find there?
A reluctant God?
A throne where we are merely reminded of our failures?
Or something very different?
Today we’ll look at why the Bible is no ordinary book, why its authority provokes resistance, and why the God whose Word exposes our hearts invites believers to come confidently to a throne of grace.
