It didn’t take long.
Less than seventy years into church history, false teachers were already creeping in.
Some wanted to water down the call to holiness.
Others wanted to add requirements God had never given.
Still others distorted the truth just enough to make their message sound Christian while leading people away from the real gospel.
Not much has changed.
False teaching rarely announces itself by saying:
“I’m about to lead you away from biblical truth.”
More often, it keeps enough Christian language to sound convincing.
It may emphasize grace while ignoring repentance.
It may talk about blessing while avoiding suffering.
It may promise happiness while saying little about holiness.
Or it may add human requirements to what Christ has already accomplished.
So how do we recognize the difference?
And why did Jude use such strong language when he urged believers to “contend earnestly for the faith”?
Perhaps one of the greatest protections against error is not merely knowing a few favorite passages, but understanding the whole counsel of God.
And that raises a searching question:
Do I really want all that God wants me to know—or only the parts that are easy to hear?
