It’s time for 5-minute Friday, a one-word writing prompt where we write for 5 minutes without editing or stopping. Today’s word is moment. It made me start thinking about all the moments in a marriage.
I wondered what moment might have impacted me the most recently. For some reason, my mind went to something my husband shares in marriage conferences.
He uses three sticks connected and slightly overlapping to give a picture of marriage. The first stick is painted red for the first stage in a relationship, that red-hot stage where you can’t get enough of each other. The second stick is gray because this is where we encounter tests and trials, new challenges like bills and jobs, dirty diapers, and socks on the floor. And sometimes in those moments, our thoughts that were once red-hot with affection now become critical. That kind of thinking starts to cause those feelings of affection to change. People in that stage often think they’ve fallen out of love and need to leave and recapture the red-hot one.
But if we love God and understand what it means to be in a covenant of marriage, we stay and work through those things. The third stick is white and that is the stage where we have peace and contentment just being together. Five minutes can’t do his explanation justice but sometimes I take a moment to just look at my husband when he’s quietly reading his Bible or working on something and think how blessed we are that God got us through those challenging times and has blessed us with the marriage we have after forty-plus years.
Blessings,
Donna ♥
