We’ve all been there. Maybe you’re there right now. You’re going through a trial yet God seems nowhere to be found. And you find yourself wondering why.
You believe His promise to never leave you or forsake you. You believe God answers prayers. But … silence.
When God Seems Silent
Where Is God?
Maybe you’ve witnessed to friends and family for years. You’ve told them how you love and trust Him. Now you wonder if this will make them question the truthfulness of all you’ve said. So where is He? Why doesn’t He answer? Why doesn’t He fix the problem, heal your loved one, meet the need, or otherwise work the way you believe He should?
I’m sure Job felt that way and David when He was running from Saul and Abraham when the promised pregnancy didn’t happen for so long. And there are many more examples recorded for us in the Bible. I know I’ve felt that way. Truth be told, I’ve got some unanswered prayers hanging out there as we speak. What are we to think at times like this?
Tested Faith
I try to remember what James had to say:
2 Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing (Jas. 1 NASB).
I’m not sure who said it first but, “Faith that isn’t tested isn’t faith.” And God does test our faith, not to hurt or discourage us but to grow us.
He wants to grow us in patience as the NKJV Bible says or endurance as we read here. In other words, He wants us to become spiritually mature.
He, also, wants us to grow in our understanding of His character … to know that we know that He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and that He truly is always with us (Heb. 13.5).
Because He is all-powerful (Jere. 32.17), He can and will do anything He pleases in His way and His time. The fact that He is all-knowing means, He knows everything that has happened, is happening, and will ever happen (Ps. 139.1-12). So, that hurt you’ve suffered is not unseen. He knows about the prayer that you’re desperate to have answered. He knows about the waiting and wondering.
Remember God is not only our powerful, sovereign Lord, He is also full of grace, including goodness, kindness, mercy, and love. And He is holy. He always gets it right. So, we can trust Him to do in our lives whatever is for our good and His glory.
