Is the desire to know the secret things about the future, our lives, or those close to us wrong? Is it permissible for Christians to visit people who claim to know things we don’t? Or are there secret things that God has not revealed and that we are forbidden to seek apart from Him and His Word? And is it possible that Satan and his demons use people who claim to know those secret things to deceive us by sounding religious or harmless?
Magic. Mediums. Spiritists. Witchcraft. Horoscopes. Palm reading. Communicating with the dead. Scripture speaks very clearly about practices connected with the occult. But then we come to a question that creates much more disagreement among Christians: What about Halloween? Some believers want nothing to do with it. Others allow their children to dress up but avoid anything connected with darkness. Some churches provide alternative events. And still others see Halloween as an unusual opportunity to meet neighbors and share the gospel. So how can Christians who genuinely love God and His Word reach different conclusions? Part of the answer is that not every question falls into exactly the same category. Some things Scripture clearly condemns. Others require us to apply biblical principles, examine our motives, and make decisions before God with a biblically informed conscience. Jeremiah’s warning about Judah’s idolatry takes us back to some very dark practices—including witchcraft, soothsaying, spiritists, and mediums. And that forces us to ask: Where does Scripture draw a clear line? What about practices people dismiss as harmless fun? And when Scripture allows room for conscience, how do we avoid judging faithful Christians who come to a different conclusion? Today we’ll look at all of that—including why the deeper issue may be one of worship and trust.
