“Who Is Jesus Really? Son of God, Liar, or Something Else?” May 17
Who is Jesus?
That may sound like a simple question, but it is actually the most important question you will ever answer.
Many people say Jesus was a good teacher. Others call Him a prophet, a moral example, or simply a good man who taught people to love one another. Even many who reject Christianity speak highly of Jesus.
But Jesus did not leave us the option of merely admiring Him.
In today’s reading from John 5, Jesus makes claims so extraordinary that the religious leaders immediately understood their implications. By calling God His Father in a unique sense, Jesus was making Himself equal with God—and they knew exactly what He meant.
That is why Jesus immediately became a threat.
Because if Jesus truly is who He claimed to be, then He cannot merely be a wise teacher offering helpful advice. He demands a response.
The question is not simply, “Who was Jesus?”
The deeper question is: Who is Jesus to you?
Because every person eventually must answer that question. And if we claim to know Him, we should also be able to explain to others why we believe what we believe.
Today’s readings invite us to consider not only Christ’s claims—but our response to them.
